Elder Abuse Investigation

GATLINBURG, Tenn.— Two members of the Gatlinburg Police Department were recognized at the February 3 City Commission meeting for their exceptional work and dedication in investigating and solving a recent elder abuse case involving online fraud.

Detective Cindy Myers and Police Officer Josh Cole were honored by the East Tennessee Justice Coalition for their roles in uncovering an online investment scam that targeted an elderly member of the Gatlinburg community.

The investigation stemmed from a report of possible internet fraud involving an elderly Gatlinburg resident who had been contacted through social media and persuaded to invest in what was presented as a legitimate investment opportunity. Over several weeks, the victim was manipulated into providing increasingly large sums of money, including a significant cash payment made during an in-person meeting, after being falsely told the investment was rapidly growing in value. When the victim later attempted to withdraw the funds and was informed additional money was required to cover taxes, law enforcement was contacted. Through swift and coordinated investigative efforts through the GPD’s Investigations Division, officers intervened before further losses occurred, ultimately leading to the arrest of a suspect on charges related to fraud, theft, and the financial exploitation of an elderly or vulnerable adult. The Sevier County Sheriff’s Office NOVA Unit also assisted during the investigation and apprehension.

Philip Gentile of the East Tennessee Justice Coalition addressed the City Commission, noting the importance of recognizing law enforcement agencies that go above and beyond in addressing online fraud, particularly when it impacts vulnerable populations.

“Our organization wanted to recognize law enforcement agencies that go the extra mile when it comes to investigating online fraud,” Gentile said. “We developed a challenge coin to honor that work, and this is the very first one we’ve ever presented.”

Gentile also expressed appreciation for the officers’ compassion and commitment to protecting older adults in the community.

“The East Tennessee Justice Coalition extends its deepest appreciation to Detective Myers and Officer Cole for their assistance in helping an elderly member of our community who was the victim of an online investment scam,” Gentile said.

Gatlinburg Police Chief Ronnie Barrett praised the officers for their professionalism and dedication throughout the investigation.

“Detective Myers and Officer Cole exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement,” Chief Barrett said. “Their persistence, attention to detail, and commitment to protecting one of our most vulnerable citizens demonstrate the heart of public service. I am extremely proud of their work and the difference they made through this investigation.”
