GATLINBURG, Tenn.—The City of Gatlinburg proudly announces that Fire Department Chief Charlie Cole has been named the Tennessee EMS Region II Director’s Association Administrator of the Year. Chief Cole received the honor earlier this month during the annual EMS Region II Directors Association Awards Banquet held at the Park Vista Hotel in Gatlinburg.

 

The award recognizes exceptional leadership, dedication, and contributions to the field of emergency medical services within Region II, which includes 16 counties across East Tennessee. Chief Cole was selected for his outstanding service, commitment to professional excellence, and continued efforts to advance emergency response and public safety in Gatlinburg and the surrounding region.

 

“I’m very proud of the accomplishments that the Gatlinburg Fire Department has made in Emergency Medical Services over my career,” Cole said. “This award is representative of all the employees of the Fire Department and all of their accomplishments to make the Department one of the most respected in East Tennessee.”

 

Chief Cole is set to retire on January 2, 2026, after more than 38 years of dedicated service to the Gatlinburg Fire Department. Throughout his distinguished career, he has led with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the safety of both the community and his fellow first responders. Cole has served as Chief of the Fire Department since 2018. Prior to becoming Chief, he served as Assistant Chief for 10 years and has also been the Department’s Training Officer and EMS Coordinator.

 

“Chief Cole’s leadership and lifelong commitment to public service have made a lasting impact on Gatlinburg,” said Gatlinburg City Manager Greg Patterson. “His decades of dedication to the Fire Department and to the advancement of emergency medical services across East Tennessee are truly deserving of this recognition.”

 

Under Chief Cole’s leadership, the Gatlinburg Fire Department has expanded its training initiatives, enhanced emergency medical response capabilities, and strengthened community partnerships, ensuring the highest standards of public safety and emergency care for residents and visitors alike.

 

The Tennessee Region II EMS Directors Association is composed of ambulance service, emergency medical service, rescue, aeromedical and hospital agencies located in East Tennessee. The EMS Region II Awards are presented annually to recognize individuals and organizations demonstrating excellence in emergency medical services, leadership, and community impact.
