GATLINBURG, Tenn.—Beginning Wednesday, August 13, 2025, contractors for the City of Gatlinburg will begin conducting smoke testing of the City’s sewer system. This testing will help identify areas in the system that may require further investigation and potential repairs.
Smoke testing is a standard maintenance procedure that uses non-toxic, non-staining smoke to locate cracks, leaks, or faulty connections in the sewer system. The smoke used is harmless to humans, pets, food, and material goods. During these tests, individuals may see smoke coming from building vent stacks, holes in the ground, or other locations. Smoke should not enter homes or buildings during the test, unless there are defects to the plumbing system or dry drain traps.
The City’s subcontractor, Smart Views, LLC, will conduct the testing and distribute informational door hangers in affected neighborhoods prior to work beginning. Initial testing in the City will take place in the Ski Mountain area. Work will typically occur Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., weather permitting. As the project progresses, testing will expand to other areas of the city. The City of Gatlinburg thanks residents for their cooperation as this important infrastructure work is completed.
