Construction and roadway work on an intersection improvement work in downtown Gatlinburg has been completed.
Work on the intersection with Parkway and River Road wrapped up on April 30. Crews will still be installing sod on ‘The Triangle’ through next week. The project will be completed later this year, when traffic control boxes, pedestrian signalization and traffic signal poles are installed after they arrive in mid-Summer.
The project was initially set to begin construction in August with a completion date of February 2021. However, with traffic at a minimum due to the COVID-19 pandemic, crews with Blalock and Sons expedited the timeline of the construction work and began on April 13.
The intersection improvement project is designed to better assist vehicle and pedestrian traffic flows. As a result of the redesigned intersection, motorists traveling east on River Road will be forced to turn right at the Mountain Mall to access Parkway. The existing crosswalk has been relocated further east to help expedite traffic flow of vehicles and pedestrians at the intersection.
